One of the five young women sponsored by Team Heartfire in 2018 to attend a sewing course. A second group visited in 2019, and the new sewers were extremely excited to show us the skills they had learned and the products they could now make, allowing them to earn an income for themselves.

During each of our journeys, travelers have the opportunity to give back in tangible ways to those that we are visiting. Some of these opportunities involve bringing donations of needed items from home — such as clothing, school supplies, reading glasses, or healthcare products. Our donations are always in response to requests from the organizations that we visit, so we know they are needed and will be put to good use.

Sometimes, there is an occasion to go above and beyond that, and fund small projects that will give the women and girls we meet a new opportunity that wouldn’t happen without our help. Those of our travelers that choose to take part in these projects become an official part of our philanthropic initiative, Team Heartfire. Here are some of our projects:

March 2018
Chajul, Guatemala
Team Heartfire travelers supported five young women through the nonprofit Limitless Horizons to take part in a 6-month sewing course (see pic at right).

March 2019
Chajul, Guatemala
Team Heartfire donated funds to pay salaries for two librarians in the community’s only library for one year.
Four of our travelers also stepped up to become sponsors of young women students in Chajul, and were able to visit these students in their homes and meet their families during our time in Chajul.

Team Heartfire is funding the expansion of a fruit tree nursery run by young, unmarried women through High Atlas Foundation and our Climate and Travel initiative. When fully funded, this new nursery will produce over 31,000 fruit tree seedlings for distribution and sale.
